Full-time maids in Singapore are still people with the same moral, emotional and physiological demands as you. We can’t just treat them in any way we want, disregarding most of the important factors that affect a person’s effectiveness.

If you have chosen to be hiring a domestic helper in Singapore, then you need to know and apply these four principles of management of maids

1. Tell her your expectations

Your full-time maid can’t read minds. Give her a list of the things you expect her to maintain and to do. Every household has its rules. What if she has no idea about some of your household unique ones? You have to set her the rules. In this way, she can come back to the list if she forgets something.

2.  Be considerate

Let him/her have at least 7-8 hours of sleep. A person can obviously work well if she has an adequate amount of energy. Just as much as you need food and a proper diet, also provide for her enough food so she can be healthy to perform her tasks well. You can also give your full-time maid a schedule that includes the chores she must do.

3. Set boundaries

People can be insensitive at times or it could just be because of cultural differences. Your maid might be using the home fixed line for too long everyday or she might be entering your room to clean without your permission. Whatever it is, make sure to clarify to her the boundaries she must be careful about.

4. Tell her your personal preference

Two people can have two different ways of handling and carrying out chores. If she does a certain chore in a different way, tell your domestic helper frankly how you would want things to be done. Don’t be angry, using ‘common sense’ as an excuse to yell at your Chinese-speaking maid.
