You don’t have to be a ballet dancer to love ballet.

At least that’s what I learned when I first joined BalletBody, a dance studio that offers ballet dance workout and pilates workout classes in Singapore. I have signed up for their classical ballet classes, on the goal that at the start of 2020, I am trying out something new for myself.

I thought I would give it a try but ended up loving it anyway. I appreciate the program that makes ballet accessible to everyone, including a non-dancer like me, while at the same time, helps increase my strength and flexibility as well as help develop my long lean muscles.

Now that I’m nearing 30 and still single, I have to stay fit should I get married and wanted to have a baby in the future.

So, What Exactly is Interesting About a Ballet Dance Workout?

Just by looking at the toned arms, tight midsection and good posture of a ballerina is enough to make anyone intimidated. What more, if you actually do what they’re doing? That’s exactly what I felt before trying out a ballet dance workout. But, braving my fears and challenging myself, I eventually did join and there’s no going back!

Allow me to share with you why, you too, should try a ballet workout.

1. You don’t have to be thin, flexible, or coordinated to try ballet

They’re all in magazines, TV and other ads: images of petite dancers posed for the Swan Lake, Cinderella, Don Quixote and all the other famous ballets—and who are not intimidated by their elegant ballet physique?

The truth is that the toned arms, trimmed waist, and shapely legs can all be achieved through a typical ballet class: barres, stretching, and freestanding exercises. Ballet is a good exercise that can get you in a desirable shape, too.

2. It can just be as intense as any other intense workout

Don’t let the elegance of ballet fool you. It can just be as intense as any other workout—a boot camp, perhaps?—and it only gets more intense through time.

At the BalletBody, the first few classes will mostly be about preparing you for more vigorous exercises, which can leave your core, calves, and inner thighs burning. Ballet’s full-body engagement can help you refine your body and at the same time, keep you active.

3. It’s a full-body workout?

Did you know that the ballet dancers are among the strongest, most versatile athletes in the world?

It’s because not only ballet will improve your balance, control, and posture, it will also help you develop long, lean, strong, and flexible muscles. As if these were not enough incentive, ballet can also protect your body from injury!

Ballet may seem intimidating but it can actually be for everyone looking to try out something new as the New Year approaches. So, I can now confidently say, it’s a new year, and a new me!

What are your plans for 2020? Share with me your thoughts!
